  Lesson 1: Prepositions

Here is even more practice to do. Good Luck!

First we will do:

"Under the Mirror"

The                      white                   sink plug(s)             is           under the mirror

           3               black                   razor(s)                  are

           #               (color)              can(s) of shaving cream

                           ______             bar(s) of soap

                           porcelain                sink(1)

                           metal                    faucet (1)

x                                  hot and cold water knobs

                                                     cold water knob(1)

                                                     hot water knob(1)

                                                      sink plug (1)

We don't usually say "2 porcelain sinks."  We say:  "a porcelain sink."

There is only one faucet, so we say:  "The metal faucet is...."

Now let's do:

"Next To The Bathtub"

The                               rubber               bathmat(s)      is                   next to the bathtub

                        2          fuzzy                                        are

                         #         shaggy

                                 ---------------------------------

                                    porcelain            toilet(1)

                                                              urinal(s)

                                ----------------------------------

                                    roll(s) of             toilet paper

                                   dirty clothes         hamper(s)

Ok.  Let's do just one more:

"On the Bathmat"

The                      water                     is             on           the bathmat

2              pair(s) of slippers    are          next to

                          clothes

                          wash cloth(s)

                         shirt(s)

                         pair(s) of pants

                        pair(s) of underwear

*We say:  "There is some water."  "There is a lot of water."  "There is much water."

We don't say:  "There is many water," because we can't count water.

"There is a lot of rice."  "There is much rice"  "There is a little rice"

For things we don't count remember:  Most often we say:  "some rice"  "a little rice" "a lot of rice" or "much rice"

Most people use "much" in negative sentences:  "I don't have much rice (water, juice, ink, time, gas...)

Let's do a chart to help you understand:  We will make a sentence like this:

I have a lot of  rice, but I don't have much water.  Ok?

I           have             a   lot of        water        but

You     don't have      much(2)       ink

We                                                rice

They                                              time

------------------

He      has                                      free time

She    doesn't have

You can practice many ways:  You can use "I" two times:

I have a lot of water but I don't have much rice.

....or you can use two pronouns like "I" and "He":

I have a lot of rice, but he doesn't have much rice.

"Time" and "Free Time" go together, so we aren't going to say:  "I have a lot of water, but I don't have much free time." NO, NO, NO

Practice this  a lot.  It is a good exercise to make this speech habit natural.
