Before we start with the exercise, LEARN THESE WORDS with the video.

I'm really sorry.  I don't have the money to put a beautiful model on this video.  You will have to look at my face.  I hope it's not too painful.

Let’s make it simple and easy. We will always use easy words for the exercises. Don’t worry about learning many words at first.

WHAT WE WANT IS TO PUT GRAMMAR INTO YOUR BRAIN, IN THE FASTEST WAY POSSIBLE.

Why?   Because once you have grammar in your brain you are free to speak and make thousands of sentences.  Speaking English will become automatic after you practice these exercises.

Ok.   We are going to use easy words:  book(s); pen(s); pencil(s); hat(s); ball(s); backpack(s); ruler(s); pencil case(s); table, desk, and shelf (shelves) 선반

Here is the chart on the next page:

             1          2           3                        4

The  book(s)       is          in                the  table

    pen(s)            isn’t      on                     desk

    pencil(s)                     under                  shelf

    hat(s)            are        next to             (shelves)

    ball(s)           aren’t   behind

    backpack(s)               in front of

    ruler(s)                      above

pencil case(s)            to the left of

                                      to the right of

        What?                            Where?

Print this Page

Exercise Set 1:  Let’s make questions:  You must learn the questions and answers.

The “What” question starts in column one and goes across.

Like this:  What is on the table?

          What are on the table?

          What is under the table?

          What are under the table?

What is next to the table?

What are next to the table?

The “where” question starts in column 3 and goes to the left.  Very easy, isn’t it.  Like this:

         Where is the book?

         Where are the books?

         Where is the pen?

         Where are the pens?

Watch this video.  It’s easy.  I promise.

Video

Practice asking and answering questions, like this:

Ask the question each time!

Where is the book?  The book is on the table.

The book is under the table.

The book is next to the table.

The book is behind the table.

The book is in front of the table.

The book is above the table.

The book is to the left of the table.

The book is to the right of the table.

The book is in the middle of the table.

The book is on the left side of the table.

The book is on the right side of the table.

Where are the books? The books are on the table.

The books are under the table.

The books are next to the table.

The books are behind the table.

The books are in front of the table.

The books are above the table.

The books are to the left of the table.

The books are to the right of the table.

The books are in the middle of the table.

The books are on the left side of the table.

The books are on the right side of the table.

Now do the same for “pen(s)”; “pencil(s)”; “hat(s)”; “ball(s)”; “backpack(s)”; “ruler(s)” and “pencil case(s).”

Now practice the “where” questions.  Answer 5 times, as you like.

Where is the book?  The book is on the desk.

The book is under the desk

The book is in the desk.

The book is in the middle of the desk.

The book is on the right side of the desk.

Next do:  Where are the books?  The books are on the shelf.

The books are next to the desk.

The books are behind the table.

The books are under the table.

The books are to the left of the desk.

Note:   Don’t read the chart.  The chart is to help you, not to think for you.  If you practice correctly your English level is going to really go up.

When you do this exercise, use the chart to check your answer.  Reading the chart will not help you.

Exercise set 2:  Question exercise

Example:   Where is the book?  Is it under the table?

                                     in the middle of

                                    on the left side of

                                    on the right side of

The next exercise will be more difficult.

We are going to practice with two things from Column 1.

Like:   “books” and “pen”

Use the chart at first.

Here goes an example:

The books are on the desk but the pen is under the table.

Practice like this:

Make five different sentences with each, ok?

1. book-pens; 2. books-pencil 3. pencils-hats; 4. hats-pencils; 5. balls-hat; 6. hats-pencils; 7. ruler-pencil cases; 8. backpack-balls

Why do we do it this way?  We are practicing "is" and "are" in the same sentence.

Watch the video to understand better.

Practice with this chart until it is easy.

Also remember, when can also do it like this:

The ball and pencil are on the table.

The hat and pencil cases are under the table.

or:

The ball is on the table and the pencil is on the table too.

The hat is under the table and the pencil cases are under the table too.   Got it?

Practice that way if you want.

Next we will have audio practice.

We will do it like this:

“books” “under” “table”—“pencil” “in front of” “desk” You say:

The books are under the table, but the pencil is in front of the desk.  Got it?

Audio practice:

1.       Hat next to table—ball under desk

The red ball is on the right side of the desk, but the blue balls are on the left side of the desk

If this was hard, use these sentences to practice.

OK.   Why did I change words on 8, 9, and 10?

Because I want you to use your own words in the chart.

I will give you extra words to practice in these charts later.

Go to the next chart please.

       1                  2            3                    4            5

The   book(s)                  in                 the  table   either.

Here’s what you do:  pick two words like “pen” and “pencils”
